Fake iPads found in boxes at big retailers

LOS ANGELES

One Massachusetts woman paid $500 at a Boston-area Wal-Mart for a plastic cube shaped like an iPad. She got a refund.

Another customer reported a similar story at a Best Buy.

How does this happen? Retail chains are not commenting. One theory suggests that scam artists are buying the tablets and replacing them with a fake one. They wrap it up and ask for a refund, and it's sold to the next person as new.
