Driver crashes into Wal-Mart in San Jose, assaults people inside, police say

SAN JOSE, Calif.

The driver of the Oldsmobile Cutlass allegedly grabbed a heavy blunt object for his assault. Four people were injured, one of them seriously. One of the injured was believed to be a Wal-Mart employee.

At first, the staff wasn't sure if the attacker had a gun. The Wal-Mart Supercenter had about 70 people inside at the time.

Enraged bystanders tackled the man, wrestled him to the floor and tied him up before police arrived.

The incident began around 11:15 a.m. with another chaotic scene outside the store, where witnesses said the driver circled around the parking lot, crashing into two cars.

Some witnesses said he may have reached speeds up to 40 mph in the parking lot.

Police have not identified the suspect or his motive. He was described only as a man in his 30s. He was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.
