Hermosa Beach Pier to close for over monthlong repairs

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif.

"Just the open space, the ocean, I feel like I'm in the middle of the ocean walking out here and I like the fact that it doesn't have a big building at the end so I can just look out," Virginia Tuan of Palos Verdes said.

Hermosa Beach's 99-year-old pier is scheduled to close Monday for 40 days to undergo repairs.

The closure will allow workers to replace the pier's six deteriorating concrete piles and its damaged concrete deck panel.

The 1,228-foot pier was built in 1914 and even has its own Facebook page with more than 11,000 fans.

"We've been living here for what, seven years now and it's one of our favorite places," Glenn Grimes of Hermosa Beach said. "We feel like we're always on vacation. They can definitely do some repair work."

"I love to see people play volleyball here," Mark Wong of Hermosa Beach said. "I bring my daughter to ride her bike and scooter, it's a fun thing."

The goal is to finish all of the repairs in time for the pier to reopen before Memorial Day on May 17.
