The city government said Monday a 64-year-old retired man in Shanghai was the latest victim of the new strain of bird flu, which had previously not been known to infect humans.
The World Health Organization is in talks with the Chinese government about possibly sending international experts to China to help investigate the new bird flu strain, known as the H7N9 bird flu virus.
So far, all of the cases remain in eastern China and have been contracted from birds. But scientists say if the virus mutates, it could easily spread from human to human.
Poultry markets are being shut down throughout China, though travelers to Asia should be aware of the new strain of bird flu.
