In Valley Village, crews utilized bulldozers, chainsaws and rakes to clean up Riverside Drive, where a large downed tree pinned two cars underneath its massive branches.
No injuries were reported in that incident, and it was not known how long the cleanup effort on Riverside Drive would last.
Some areas saw gusts up to 80 mph on Monday. The Antelope Valley was one of the areas hit hardest by the high winds. A dust storm there cut visibility down to zero at times. In San Marino, fire fighters put out small fires after downed power lines contacted brush close to homes.
In addition to cleaning up, thousands of people were without power because of the winds. About 1,006 Southern California Edison customers, mostly in the Riverside area, were without power in the morning. Other affected cities included South Gate, Monterey Park, Ventura and Hemet.
Power was restored to all Department of Water and Power customers as of 8 a.m.
Local power companies are warning customers to call 911 if they see downed power lines.
