Abbott Laboratories recalls blood glucose meters over possible false readings

LOS ANGELES

Abbott Laboratories is voluntarily recalling its FreeStyle InsuLinx blood glucose meters.

The company said the meters may display and store blood glucose levels that are much lower than the actual reading. The problem can lead to delayed and incorrect treatment, resulting in serious injury or even death.

"Our first priority is to safeguard the health and safety of patients," said Heather Mason, senior vice president of Abbott Diabetes Care. "We are committed to ensuring that our customers are able to continue to test their blood glucose with confidence, and we initiated this voluntary recall to ensure our products continue to meet the highest standards of quality and safety. We regret any inconvenience this action may cause."

Customers can contact Abbott Diabetes Care Customer Service at (866) 723-2697. They can also download a software update to fix the problem.
