Sheriff: Suicidal man with knife shot by Moreno Valley police officer

MORENO VALLEY

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department said police received a call at 10:30 p.m. from a woman who said her roommate was attempting suicide by cutting his arms with a knife at a home in the 24000 block of Fir Avenue in Moreno Valley. Police responded and located the man inside a locked bathroom, and they eventually were able to persuade him to come outside.

Officers said the man complied with their commands and dropped the knife to the floor. But he then grabbed the knife, raised it above his head, and made threatening statements to the officers as he advanced toward them, according to the sheriff's department.

An officer opened fire, striking the man once. The injured man was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot wound and self-inflicted lacerations. His name has not been released.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. No officers were injured.
