Authorities say San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies were involved in a pursuit of a male driver and a female passenger in a Volvo at about 2:15 p.m. and traveled northbound on Interstate 15.
The vehicle drove over a spike strip at Zzyzx Road, and the car eventually exited at Cima Road, about 70 miles outside Las Vegas, and crashed into a fence near a gas station.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver got out and pulled out a gun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The driver was declared dead at the scene, and the passenger was taken into custody. Their names have not been released. No officers were injured in the incident.
