Eight other players were disciplined: From the Diamondbacks, infielder Eric Hinske received a five-game suspension, and catcher Miguel Montero and outfielder Gerardo Parra were issued fines. From the Dodgers, pitcher J.P. Howell and infielder/outfielder Skip Schumaker received two-game suspensions, and fines were issued to Greinke and outfielder Yasiel Puig.
Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire received a two-game suspension for his conduct, and Dodgers manager Don Mattingly and Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson each received a one-game suspension.
The Dodgers were also fined for allowing players on the disabled list to leave the dugout and enter the field, which violated Major League Baseball rules. In addition, neither club will be allowed to have players who are on the disabled list sit in its dugout in their games throughout the weekend.
The confrontation at Chavez Ravine began when Kennedy hit Puig with a pitch that deflected off his shoulder and grazed his nose in the bottom of the sixth inning. Greinke then hit Montero in the back during the top of the seventh, which drew a warning from the umpire. Both teams came charging onto the field, but the scrum broke up quickly with no punches thrown.
"Puig gets hit in the face, Montero gets hit, it should have been really over at this point," Mattingly said after the brawl.
But when Kennedy returned fire and hit Greinke on the upper left shoulder, and the ball deflected off his helmet, both benches cleared, producing the prolonged and heated scuffle between the two teams.
"I was out of my mind just trying to protect my teammates," Belisario said. "If you want to hit somebody, don't hit a pitcher. Don't hit guys in the head. That's crazy."
Kennedy immediately was tossed from the game before players poured onto the field. Belisario began throwing punches and a shouting Puig rushed into the melee. McGwire had Gibson's jersey and windbreaker with both hands and was screaming at him.
"I know they're mad. They thought we hit Puig, but certainly we didn't," Gibson said. "The guy hits everything out over the plate. But the ball got away from Ian and got inside. It's as simple as that. I didn't order anything. It's certainly not what Ian wanted to do."
The Dodgers went on to beat the Diamondbacks 5-3 that night.
