John Rand Agosta, 37, was convicted Monday of one felony count in the murder of 28-year-old Alejandra Hernandez.
On June 16, 2011, Agosta waited for Hernandez outside the preschool where she worked in Irvine. He watched her drive away and followed her in his Ford Mustang.
After Hernandez pulled over into a cul-de-sac, Agosta got out of his car and shot her nine times in the chest.
He got back into his vehicle, but was unable to start the engine. Agosta exited his car, turned over Hernandez's body with his foot, and then fled the scene on foot, leaving his Mustang behind.
Agosta called a friend, who did not know about the shooting, and asked for a ride. Agosta was later arrested at the friend's Mission Viejo home.
Agosta faces a minimum sentence of 50 years to life in state prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 30.
