60 Freeway to see first set of 'Summer Slam' closures Friday

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif.

Dubbed the "Summer Slam" by Caltrans, drivers can expect a series of 55-hour lane closures between Nogales Street and Fullerton Road.

It will not be a full freeway closure. Each time, the closures will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and last until 5 a.m. Monday. Closure days include:

  • Friday, July 12 - Monday, July 15, three westbound lanes will be closed.
  • Friday, July 26 - Monday July 29, two westbound lanes will be closed.
  • Friday, Aug. 9 - Monday Aug. 12, three eastbound lanes will be closed.
  • Friday, Aug. 23 - Monday Aug. 26, two eastbound lanes will be closed.

"It's going to be a very terrible weekend, because especially on the 60, the east and west, it gets really congested. On a regular day, it gets really packed," said Eugel Nicolau of Diamond Bar.

Caltrans officials say unlike other freeway closures, this one won't be as bad since there are two other parallel freeways drivers can use.

"Interstate 10 is a parallel freeway to the north, they can use Interstate 210, or they can use SR-91 to the south. The SR-57 runs north and south between all three of these freeways, and that's a way to get around," said CHP Capt. Daniel Minor.

Detours will also be posted on streets so those traveling on the 60 can be taken off and then back on again.

Either way, Caltrans officials say expect major delays. They say the best bet do what most people did during /*Carmageddon*/ and stay home.
