2 pistachio recalls issued over possible salmonella risk

LOS ANGELES

The Food and Drug Administration says batches of Hilo Products Roasted & Salted Natural Pistachios may carry the bacteria. The bags in question were distributed by Los Angeles-based Tom and Glasser, Inc. to Hawaii, California and Arizona. Each bag has a lot code, 0923, that can be found on the back corner next to the seal.

Customers who have purchased the nuts are advised not to eat them. They can return them for a full refund. The company has also set up an information line at 800-282-6887.

Western Mixers Produce and Nut Company of Los Angeles issued a recall for Treasured Harvest Pistachios. The pistachios were distributed in California, Nevada, Ohio and Utah through retail stores, mail order and various distributors during the dates of: October 17, 2012 - May 28, 2013.

Treasured Harvest roasted and salted pistachios and raw, shelled pistachios are affected, in 6 oz., 12 oz., 28 oz. and 5 pound packages. Specific lot numbers on packages include 123050, 123140, 123320, 123450, 123360, 130150, 130240, 130350, 130290, 123100, 122960, 123040, 123550, 130020, 122920, 123380, 130070, 131160, 131200, 131230, 131300, 131400, and 131500.

The recall is a voluntary recall of the pistachio products processed by ARO Pistachio during the 2012 harvest year.

Consumers who have purchased Treasured Harvest Pistachios with reference to the above lot numbers, are urged to destroy the product and/or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
