91 Freeway shooting injures 2; suspects sought

BELLFLOWER, Calif.

Gunfire rang out around 8:40 p.m. just west of the 605 Freeway. According to the California Highway Patrol, there was some sort of altercation between two men in a Chrysler 300 and two other men in a gray Honda Accord coupe. It ended in gunfire and both vehicles crashing on the freeway.

"Both vehicles have damage that indicates they contacted each other at some point, and we know that they each went their separate ways and contacted the walls. We also know there was a shooting involved sometime during or immediately after that collision," said Capt. Daniel Minor with the CHP.

One victim in the Chrysler was shot at least three times and is in critical condition, according to authorities. The other man was shot once in the elbow.

"There are at least three bullet holes in the driver side of the vehicle. It appears that one entered through the left rear window, one through the left front door, and actually a second through the left front door frame," said Minor.

The CHP said witnesses told them a silver SUV stopped and picked up the two suspects as they ran along the freeway. Authorities said they are checking a home in Bell Gardens, where the suspect's vehicle is registered.

The 91 Freeway was shut down as investigators scoured the smashed Chrysler 300 for clues. Traffic was backed up for miles.
