Ventura County deputy-involved shooting leaves man dead

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif.

The shooting happened shortly before 5 p.m. near Ventura Avenue and Fraser Lane.

Deputies say they were alerted to a man yelling and waving his arms in the middle of the street. According to officials, the man started punching a female deputy, who arrived at the scene with a K-9 unit.

The dog then attacked the man, who allegedly continued to assault the deputy. At that point, the deputy shot the man, sending him to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

The deputy sustained minor injuries.

Authorities say it does not appear that the man was armed. His name was not immediately released.
