Nearby residents showed up at the 33,000-square-foot grocery store and pharmacy at Cesar Chavez and Grand avenues to buy household items, groceries and baked goods.
Store manager Kenney Tran says the store will have events going on throughout the weekend in honor of its grand opening.
"We plan on having vendors out here," said Tran. "They're going to be doing a lot of sampling. They're going to be bringing a lot of items here for our customers to try, brand new products. And we're definitely going to be sampling our baked goods and some of our items that we produce here fresh at our store."
An Asian-American labor group and a Chinatown community organization sued the city of Los Angeles earlier this year over plans to build the store.
The two agencies claimed the store would hurt the character of Chinatown and put mom and pop stores out of business. They said the local community and small business would be disrupted by the large retailer's presence.
A tenant group in the area and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, however, both supported the project.
