5 Fwy reopens in Sun Valley after mudslide

SUN VALLEY, LOS ANGELES

The hillside along the northbound 5 Freeway at the Roscoe Boulevard overpass gave way around 2 p.m., trapping one driver in the thick mud. The heavy run-off then flowed across into the southbound lanes, creating a massive pool of muddy water and stalling another vehicle.

Commuter traffic was severely affected during the afternoon into the evening. All lanes reopened by 9:20 p.m.

Crews finished clearing the mud and debris as engineers surveyed the saturated hillside. Plastic sheeting now covers the mudslide in case of more rain. The catch basin that caused the muddy mess is now cleared of several feet of debris.
