Patrol officers say they spotted a stolen vehicle near Magnolia Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway around 7 p.m.
When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver fled, leading authorities on a short pursuit. He appeared to lose control on the southbound Terminal Island Freeway, flipping over an embankment.
A passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver attempted to flee but was swiftly taken into custody.
