Sriracha plant in Irwindale ordered to partially close

IRWINDALE, Calif.

Neighbors of the Huy Fong Foods plant have been complaining that the strong odors from the plant make them sick.

According to some residents, a smell that wafts from the factory has caused headaches, watery eyes and even a burning sensation in the throat.

The judge ruled the company must stop any kind of operations that could be causing the odors and make immediate changes.

Huy Fong Foods uses 100 million pounds of peppers a year to make the sauce. The plant does have exhaust fans on the roof for ventilation, and Huy Fong Foods says it passed a recent inspection by the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

The company opened its 650,000-square-foot facility two years ago.
