405 Freeway crash: 11 injured in 8-vehicle pileup

A multi-vehicle accident on the 405 Freeway shut down all southbound lanes in the Van Nuys area on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013.

An eight-vehicle pileup on the 405 Freeway in Van Nuys injured 11 people and backed up traffic heading into the Sepulveda Pass for miles Wednesday.

Authorities say the crash happened in the southbound lanes just north of Sherman Way at about 9:30 a.m.

Of the 11 injured in the crash, five were in mild to moderate condition, one person was in serious condition and the others were treated and released, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

At one point, the crash shut down all southbound lanes at Sherman Way and two northbound lanes. All lanes reopened at about noon.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
