The woman who inspired the lead female role in the movie "Top Gun" is making history. Christine Fox is the first woman appointed to the Pentagon's number two job.

Fox will serve as acting deputy secretary of defense until a permanent successor is named.

Fox was working as a mathematician at the Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego when filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer reportedly chose her as the model for "Charlie," Tom Cruise's love interest as played by Kelly McGillis.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel calls Fox a "brilliant defense thinker."
