Aaron Loy is one of four students at UCSB who contracted the disease. He is a freshman at the school and was a member of the university's lacrosse team.
Doctors were able to save his life when he first became ill in November, but the meningitis led to sepsis, which led doctors to amputate both of his lower legs.
Meningitis is a disease caused by the inflammation of the protective membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. It's spread through close contact like kissing, sharing drinks, food and cigarettes. One in 10 die of the disease, and 20 percent of those who survive can lose limbs because the blood can't circulate.
Since his hospitalization, Loy's family has shared details of their son's fight and recovery through social media. Now, they're asking for help to pay his medical bills.
