Woman shot to death in Long Beach; man arrested

LONG BEACH, Calif.

Authorities responded to a call about a shooting on the 3500 block of Monica Avenue at about 10 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found a female victim dead at the scene.

Monica Barboza, 54, was found dead inside a converted garage, where she had apparently been living, according to police. She suffered a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Officers were then notified of a second victim, who was taken to a local hospital. The victim, only identified as a 52-year-old Hawaiian Gardens resident, was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

After following up on leads, detectives arrested documented gang member Robert Rubio Jr. of Hawaiian Gardens.

Detectives believe Rubio, 53, was involved in an ongoing dispute with other residents at the home, which ultimately led to the shooting. The victims are not married, but are related through marriage.

Rubio was booked for murder and attempted murder. His bail was set at $1 million. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Todd Johnson and Roger Zottneck at (562) 570-7244.
