DUI crash: Driver makes 1st court appearance to face murder charge

MISSION VIEJO, Calif.

Police say Kourosh Keshmiri was speeding and under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his red Cadillac into a house Sunday, killing 60-year-old Kenneth Jackson while he was sleeping.

Keshmiri appeared in a Santa Ana courtroom and spoke through an interpreter. He did not enter a plea. His arraignment hearing was continued to Jan. 14.

The 27-year-old Mission Viejo resident was already facing a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol from a June incident, and his driver's license was suspended. In addition, he already had a misdemeanor DUI conviction in August 2010.

If convicted, Keshmiri faces 15 years to life in state prison. He is being held on $1 million bail.
