Wind topples tree on San Bernardino elementary school

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.

The tree, estimated to be approximately 45 feet tall, fell atop an administrative building of Mount Vernon Elementary School on West 10th Street. School officials believe the incident occurred sometime between 6 p.m. Monday and midnight.

Authorities believe the incident was wind related. Fortunately, officials do not believe the tree caused structural damage to the building.

School is scheduled to be open Tuesday and operate as normal.

The wind also howled elsewhere across the Southland overnight, whipping through Fontana and Porter Ranch.

With the continued red flag warning, which began Sunday and is expected to last through Wednesday, firefighters have taken extra precautions and are increasing their staffing.
