Hawthorne assault: Man charged with murder in cab driver's death

HAWTHORNE, Calif.

Eddy Nwanyanwu, 53, was attacked and killed last Monday outside a strip mall at Prairie Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard.

Detectives say the suspect, Cedric Dominic Staten, is seen on surveillance video punching Nwanyanwu at least once in the head area, knocking him to the ground.

According to investigators, it all started as a parking dispute between Nwanyanwu and the suspect's female relative. Police believe the relative called Staten on the phone and told him to come to the scene.

The video shows Staten approaching Nwanyanwu and attacking him without provocation. The suspect then fled the scene. Police say the victim went into convulsions and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Staten was arrested three days after the attack. His bail was set at $1 million.
