UCSB student alleged victim of gang rape; suspects sought

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.

The 19-year-old woman said she was beaten and sexually assaulted by several men early Sunday morning somewhere between campus and the neighboring community of Isla Vista. Detectives say the victim was last seen between midnight and 12:30 a.m. walking northbound on Embarcadero Del Mar near Segovia Road.

They say the victim returned home before being taken to the hospital to be treated for several injuries. She has since been released and is now with her family.

Sheriff's deputies are trying to identify the suspects. They have used search dogs to try to pinpoint where the crime took place.

"Right now, what we have to go on is that the suspects are described as Asian males. Obviously, this is a lot for the victim to go through, so we are working with her to try to get a better description and find who did this," said Kelly Hoover with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

The university used text and email alerts to inform students of the alleged attack.

Authorities are hoping that someone may have seen or heard something that will help them with the investigation. Anyone with information was asked to call investigators at (805) 681-4171.
