Jury duty scam targets Ventura County residents

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif.

Several residents have received calls by someone claiming to be an officer with a warrant for their arrest. The caller tells victims they have the option to pay a fine over the phone, officials said.

Some victims have returned calls to messages left on answering machines and have heard a fake recorded message from the Sheriff's Office, officials said.

Since 2005, jury service scams have targeted people across the country. Suspects use internet programs to alter their voice and imitate area codes to add legitimacy.

Sheriff's employees never request financial or payment information over the phone. If a jury service call is received, call the Ventura County Superior Court Jury Services Division directly at (805) 654-2256.
