OTRC: Oscars 2014: Matthew McConaughey of 'Dallas' wins Leading Actor

Matthew McConaughey has has won the 2014 Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as HIV-positive patient Ron Woodroof in Jean-Marc Vallee's drama film "Dallas Buyers Club," marking his first win and nomination.

The winners were announced at a live ceremony that took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and aired live on ABC on Sunday, March 2. McConaughey beat Bruce Dern of "Nebraska," Chiwetel Ejiofor of "12 Years A Slave," Christian Bale of "American Hustle" and Leonardo DiCaprio of "The Wolf of Wall Street."

In "Dallas Buyers Club," McConaughey's character is told he has little time to live and he spends it smuggling anti-viral medications from around the world that are not approved in the U.S. in order to survive and help other patients. One of them is Rayon, a transgender woman, played by Jared Leto. The two becomes friends and business partners. Both Leto and McConaughey lost a significant amount of weight for their roles.

This marks the first Oscar nomination for McConaughey, a 44-year-old Texas native. The actor lost 50 pounds for 'Dallas Buyers Club.' (Check out what he said about how people reacted to his emaciated look, in an interview with OTRC.com.)

McConaughey is also known for past roles in movies such as the cult stoner comedy "Dazed and Confused," the male stripper drama "Magic Mike" and the blockbuster "A Time To Kill."
