Claremont police chase crash leaves Target burglary suspect dead

CLAREMONT, Calif.

Police said the chase started around 5:30 p.m. in Montclair after they got a call about a burglary at a Target store in the 9000 block of Central Avenue.

When officers arrived, a male suspect carrying two large TVs ran out of the store through a fire exit. He hopped into a four-door Honda Accord, driven by 28-year-old Gabrielle Wines. The two headed south on Central Avenue.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspects gave chase and entered the westbound 10 Freeway.

The chase ended in a crash with three other cars as the suspects exited at Indian Hill Boulevard. The male suspect died after he was ejected and ended up under a white truck that landed on its side, authorities said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified. Wines was taken to a local hospital for complaints of pain. She has been taken into custody and faces a number of charges, including murder.

Three other people were hospitalized with minor injuries.

The accident blocked the exit and snarled traffic. The exit has since been reopened.
