The 24-year veteran of Yosemite High School, who teaches science and multimedia, is undergoing a gender transformation and changing his name to Karen Adell Scott.
"I was born transgender," Sconce said. "My earliest memories were that even though my body was a little boy body, which I really didn't understand, I was a girl. I knew I was a girl."
The 56-year-old husband and father came out to his family last April.
Sconce has been undergoing hormone replacement therapy in order to make the emotional transition.
His gender change is getting mixed reaction from students, staff and members of the community. Some parents are even pulling their kids out of class.
