Westminster pursuit crash: Girl, 12, killed after suspect hits van

WESTMINSTER, Calif.

Police say the suspect fled the scene on foot after the crash. They set up a perimeter in the area of Trask Avenue and Hoover Street to look for the suspect. As of 11 p.m., he was still at large.

The pursuit began around 6 p.m. Investigators say when police tried to pull over the driver, he rammed into the police car and sped away. The suspect only drove two blocks before he slammed into the minivan and another car.

"Once he collided with those two vehicles, his car flipped over and also crashed. He bailed out of the car," said Sgt. Cameron Knauerhaze with the Westminster Police Department.

The mother and two children were taken to a local hospital, where one of the children died of her injuries. The woman and other child are said to be in serious condition.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story reported the girl who was killed in the crash was 11. It was later learned she was 12. Her age has since been corrected.
