Camp Pendleton brush fire forces evacuations

SAN DIEGO

The fire erupted on the southeast side of the base near the town of Fallbrook at about 9:45 a.m. Naval Weapons Station personnel, De Lez housing residents and Mary Fay Pendleton Elementary School were ordered to evacuate.

The blaze has scorched approximately 150 acres. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Just south of Camp Pendleton, another brush fire erupted in Carlsbad in the area of Poinsettia Lane and Alicante Road at about 10:30 a.m.

Multiple structures were threatened by flames, and more than 11,000 homes and businesses have been ordered to evacuate. An evacuation center has been opened at Calavera Hills Community Center, 2997 Glasgow, and Westfield Plaza Camino Real for people and animals.

At least one home off Poinsettia Lane has caught fire, according to ABC affiliate KGTV.

Firefighters are battling the wildfires amid windy and hot conditions, with temperatures reaching the 90s in San Diego County.
