MISSION HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Our ABC7 Cool Kid for Thursday, May 14, is Kelly Frederick whose passion for animals inspired her to start a fundraising club at her high school for critters in need.

Kelly volunteers at the Best Friends Animal Shelter in Mission Hills. Her time there gave her the idea to start a club that collects money to help animals in need at Bishop Alemany High School.

"What I really wanted to do is make sure that we raise enough money so there's never any question of 'Is there enough money so that dog can get a surgery? Is there another blanket for that little puppy?' It's just all going to be there," she said.

It is also important for Kelly and her fellow club members to get the word out about helping and rescuing animals. She said one of the main goals is to spread the word and raise awareness about the money animal shelters need.

Caring for the animals takes a lot of time and unending dedication. Kelly's mentors said she has what it takes and is a motivated person who finishes what she starts.

She and her friends want to make sure those furry, four-legged animals find their forever homes.

"They don't have a voice. They can't stand up for themselves so they need someone to do it for them. A lot of people kind of just take care of themselves first, and these poor animals they need to get off the streets and get the care and love that they deserve," she said.
