Professional Christmas light installer offers safety tips
Safety is the key to keeping things merry and bright, but professionals say this winter's El Nino may make things a little trickier.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (KABC) -- Darell Lee has decorated 111 houses with Christmas lights this season.

A lot of his business comes from clients not only looking for the convenience of a professional Christmas light installer but also the safety.

Lee says the likelihood of more rain this season is an important aspect to consider if you're hanging your own lights this year.

"What I suggest is mostly just don't have the connection sitting there on the ground where it can pull in water," he said.

Lee says to also inspect the cords on any reused light strands to make sure there aren't any cracks exposing the wiring itself.

"The danger is one, you can get electrocuted if you're going out in the rain. There's a possibility of it. Your system could be shorting out," Lee said.

It's also not the best idea to try waterproofing light connections with plastic.

"We don't ever tape or wrap our connections because you could never make them waterproof, you can make them water resistant," Lee said.
