Mother shot in front of 1-year-old in Compton

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A mother was shot in Compton while inside an SUV with her 1-year-old child in the back seat, sheriff's officials said Sunday.

The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of Grandee Avenue about 10:15 p.m., according to officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Compton Station.

It was unclear whether the unidentified woman was driving the vehicle when the gunman or gunmen opened fire, and officials said there were no details on how the suspect came upon the victim.

The woman was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, and sheriff's officials said the child was not struck.

No description of the shooter or shooters was immediately provided, but officials said they do not believe the shooting was gang-related.
