LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Southland is celebrating Dia de los Muertos, the holiday that honors those who have passed on to the next life.

Festivities for the Day of the Dead kicked off over the weekend and continued Monday in downtown Los Angeles' Grand Park, where alters were set up to honor loved ones who have passed.

Tuesday, teachers from schools - some as far as Laguna Beach - brought their students to Olvera Street in downtown to see the alters, reminding kids of the culture behind the festivities.

Although Dia de los Muertos has ancient roots, the celebration of life has become a lot more popular lately. Traditionally, it consisted of quiet family gatherings at graves or alters set up inside homes or restaurants.
