GLASSELL PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Our ABC7 Cool Kid for Thursday, Oct. 9, is John Ronquillo, who volunteers with students who are visually impaired .

The high school student moved to the U.S. from the Philippines at a young age and didn't always feel like he fit in. That experience inspired him to help others feel connected, including the students he works with at Irving Magnet School.

"You're giving him or her more experience in life. The next thing you know, they're going to be fine and they're going to live a better life," Ronquillo said.

Ronquillo values the time he spends with these kids.

"It makes me feel like I want to have a younger brother and a younger sister. So I can take care of them and protect them," he said.

His mentors have noticed his commitment and passion to help.

"John has a heart of gold. He knows that it doesn't matter what obstacle someone might have, it doesn't make them different. It just makes them part of our society," Rebecca Guevara said.

Ronquillo wants to brighten the world not only for his students, but also for others in his community.

"It was very good helping other people. It makes you feel like you're showing them you're a part of the community," Ronquillo said.
