WOODLAND HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Our ABC7 Cool Kid for Thursday, June 2, is Melody Niv, who formed a social justice club at her high school in Woodland Hills.

Niv grew up knowing she was fortunate and realized not everyone else was. So she formed the club when she was a freshman at El Camino Real Charter High School.

She wants the club to be more. In addition to raising awareness, she wants students to get involved and ask questions.

"Always doubt what you first hear because there's always two sides to a story. There's always two ways to think about a situation," she said.

Whatever the cause, Niv hopes the members of her club find issues they're passionate about. It takes a certain type of person to lead a social justice club, and the club's advisor said Niv has those leadership qualities.

"She's very interested in people and having conversations and discussing things that matter. You don't really see that in many teenagers all the time," Sue Freitag said.

Niv makes it a serious goal to improve her community and she hopes others can do the same.
