Local beach communities offering free workouts to promote health

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- You can cross cost off your "I can't workout" excuse list, as one local community is offering free workouts.

"Beach Cities Health District realized that we need to create opportunities for people to be physically active," said Dr. Lisa Santora, the chief medical officer for the district.

Santora said the district has 25 studios featuring 30 classes from Manhattan Beach down to Redondo Beach.

There is yoga, Tabata, hip hop fusion, Pilates, cycling, strength training, boot camp and more. Each class uses unique fitness tools and toys with top trainers.

"To keep the spice up to keep it diversified. People get bored with their fitness routine so we want to make sure that they get a taste of everything," Santora said.

"Fitness should be fun no matter what you're doing and sometimes it's hard to find what you enjoy," said Kim Lyons, co-owner of Bionic Body.

Lyons said this program opens the door for people to try their signature Bionic Body class and more.

"There's nothing to lose. You go out there, you try different things that you might be intimidated by or maybe that you wanted to try but aren't willing to pay for," Lyons said.

For business owners it's a chance to show off their stuff.

"We want people who haven't done Pilates before to be able to experience it and all our other classes like Zumba, kickboxing. Classes are only 50 minutes. We play music, it goes by fast, all our instructors are really great," said Christine Crivello, co-owner of Hip Studio.

Santora cites research that claims just one in five Americans actually get the level of physical activity that they need, and this community wants to change that.

The Beach Cities Health District free fitness weekends run Friday through Sunday, on the first weekend of every month from now all the way through April.

But you do have to sign up for some of the classes because they're popular. All it's going to cost you is a little effort.
