Elderly couple found murdered in Glendale home

GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- The grandson of an elderly couple found murdered in their Glendale home was named a person of interest on Sunday.

"The investigators are talking to him to find out if in fact he is involved in this crime," Glendale Police Det. Robert William said.

Nathaniel Scheiern, 34, had been living with the couple for about a year, neighbors said. He was in a serious car accident a few days ago and remained in a hospital on Monday.

The couple in their 70s and 80s, identified as William and Verna Scheiern, was found dead at about 9:30 a.m. at their house in the 600 block of Alexander Street.

A concerned family member had called police after they didn't answer the phone. When officers arrived, they found the front door open and the couple's bodies decomposing inside. A coroner was determining a cause of death.

The home did not appear to be burglarized or ransacked. Investigators believe the couple was targeted.

Neighbors said the couple had lived in the neighborhood for at least 20 years.

"I was shocked because this is a pretty quiet neighborhood. There's no crime on this street in particular," neighbor Tony Passarella said.

No arrests were made.

An investigation was underway.
