Triple Play helps kids learn to keep mind, body, soul in shape
It was three times the fun in Hollywood on Wednesday for kids who are members of the Boys and Girls Club of America.

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The kids from the Hollywood Boys & Girls Club are getting a bit of a warm up for a big event next week called the "Triple Play Takeover."

"It's going to be a full day of exercise for the kids across the Boys & Girls Clubs across the country," said Les Ybarra of Anthem/Blue Cross Foundation.

Ybarra says this program has been going strong for a decade, thanks to a generous grant from the Anthem/Blue Cross Foundation.

"We've awarded them a $10 million grant over the course of five years. That is a national grant," said Ybarra.

It's called Triple Play because they want children to learn the importance of mind, body and soul. And making exercise fun is a key way to do that.

"I like we're getting energized. And they're encouraging us to be happy," said Maylan Hernandez of the Hollywood Boys & Girls Club.

There's also a healthy habits course to teach the importance of healthy food choices, meal prep and how often to exercise.

"We want them to have physical activity at least one hour a day so this is a great way to give them example of how to do it," said Aide Aguirre, program director for the Boys & Girls Club.

On July 14, the Boys & Girls Clubs across America will hold a Triple Play Day. That's where they're going to get all the clubs together to exercise simultaneously in hopes of accruing one million minutes.

"Obstacle courses, races, anything to get them active," reminded Aguirre.

Aguirre says the clubs are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. To participate on Triple Play Day, kids need to be members, but it's an inexpensive and simple process.

"It costs $30 a year for the annual membership. That's all you have to do," said Aguirre.
