LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Here's some advice for holiday travelers: Pack some patience.

A record number of Southern Californians are expected to travel this holiday season - and most of them will be on the freeways.

Some 8.2 million Southern California residents are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this holiday season, according to the Auto Club of Southern California.

Of them, 7.2 million will be traveling by car.

The busiest day is expected to be Wednesday.

Most though, are staying within the state. The top destination for Southern Californians this season is San Francisco, with San Diego coming in second, according to the Auto Club.

"So a lot of people are staying in California, but they will be traveling pretty good distances to visit friends and family," said Doug Shupe with AAA.

Nationally, a record 107 million people are expected to travel this holiday season, with about 90 percent of them driving. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be the worst travel days in most cities.
