7 LASD officials convicted in jail corruption cover-up lose appeal

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected appeals filed by seven former Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, sergeants and lieutenants convicted in the jail corruption case.

The court issued its opinion Wednesday, rejecting the appeals and affirming the previous convictions and sentences. It's likely all seven will begin serving their prison sentences in the near future. Their sentences ranged from 18 months to 41 months.

Gerard Smith, Mickey Manzo, James Sexton, Maricela Long, Scott Craig, Steve Leavins and Greg Thompson were all convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of justice in July 2014. Long and Craig were also convicted on charges of making false statements.

All seven had appealed their convictions and remained free on bail.
