Mysterious jelly creatures invade Huntington Beach shores

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Recent Huntington Beach visitors and residents have noted a strange appearance of jelly-like, flesh-colored creatures washing ashore.

"Every place we went, from one end to the other, we saw these little round opaque looking (things). We thought they looked like embryos," beach visitor Ted Brickler said.

The small, strange species, with a reddish inside, were found to be about the size of a thumb.

"I started noticing them Thanksgiving morning in the water. I think they're little baby jellyfish," Huntington Beach resident Joe Ali said.

"Like a turtle egg without a shell," noted Brickler.

Some believe the creatures to be sea cucumbers while others said they were far too alien.

"We've seen them interact with each other and kind of move along the beach and burrow into the sand," Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division Lt. Eric Dieterman said.

Marine experts have been called by veteran lifeguards in order to discover what the creatures are.

"I've been here for about 30 years now and I've probably seen it once before but it was a very quick episode," Dieterman shared.

Fortunately, the jelly-like beings have proved no harm to humans.

"They don't hurt, they don't sting or nothing. They're just on the beach kind of washed up," Ali said.
