'The Juslims': Jewish-Muslim best friends in Laguna Niguel win Halloween with superhero costume

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (KABC) -- Two girls in Laguna Niguel made a statement with their Halloween costume that received high praises on social media.

Like most 13 year olds, Casey Pearlman and Yasmin Idris looked forward to Halloween and dressing up.

This year, the best friends decided on a superhero theme.

Casey is Jewish and Yasmin is Muslim. Together they formed the superhero duo "The Juslims."

"I feel like this is an example of how everyone should be no matter what race, gender, religion, you should all be united as one," Yasmin said.

Donning capes, the teens said they were having fun with their costumes and made it clear on their shirts by writing, "Don't Worry. It's not religious."

"It was so innocent, there was nothing to it. There was no religious to it. They weren't even trying to make a statement. I thought in not trying to make a statement they made a statement," Jeff Pearlman, Casey's father said.

After Casey's father posted the photo to Twitter it quickly went viral.

"It just starts blowing up like super quick," Jeff Pearlman explained.

The pictured racked up more than 60,000 retweets and 125,000 likes in just a few days.

In the caption he wrote, "My daughter is Jewish. Her best pal is Muslim. For Halloween they created a superhero team: The Juslims. I've rarely been more proud. Truly."

The girls said they never expected such a response. In fact, when they wore their costumes to school, they said some of the students didn't understand what "Juslims" meant.

The two best friends now hope their positive message will influence people to be more accepting of one another.

"Just because you're a different religion and race from another person it doesn't mean you can't be friends with them or get along with them," Casey said.
