Kidnapping reported near CSUN did not happen, police say

NORTHRIDGE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An attempting kidnapping that was reported near the campus of Cal State Northridge last month did not actually happen, investigators have determined.

The report made on Sept. 27 put the entire campus on edge.

A woman said a man had come up behind her, put her in a bear hug and tried to kidnap her about a block from campus. She said she fought him off and was able to run away.

She gave a description and police issued a sketch of the supposed suspect.

Now, investigators have determined no such incident occurred.

"Following an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department with the help of CSUN Police, LAPD has determined that this incident is unfounded," CSUN police Chief Anne Glavin said in a note to the campus community.

"The definition of 'unfounded' is that the incident alleged in the crime report did not occur."

It was not immediately clear if the woman who made the report would face any repercussions.
