La Conchita marks 10-year anniversary of deadly landslide
LA CONCHITA, Calif. (KABC) -- A bell-ringing ceremony was held Saturday on the 10-year anniversary of the massive landslide in Ventura County that killed 10 people.
Dozens of residents, friends and family gathered to remember those who lost their lives in 2005. The bell rang 10 times, once for each victim.
Even after a decade, the seaside town of La Conchita still shows many signs of the destruction. Parts of the hillside remain bare and several houses have been left untouched.
Diane Hart was buried alive in a mound of rock, house debris and darkness. She sustained fractures to her ribs, three vertebrae and two bones in her left forearm and her scapula but survived.
Ten years later, she lives 98 miles away and says she still suffers from long-term impacts of the slide.
La Conchita is located just south of the Santa Barbara County line.
