Event promotes Halloween safety, honors teens killed trick-or-treating

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- Halloween is one of many kids' favorite times of year, but it can also be one of the most dangerous.

Last Halloween, twins Lexi and Lexandra Perez-Huerta and their best friend, Andrea Gonzalez, were out trick-or-treating in Santa Ana when they were hit by an SUV as they walked in a crosswalk.

The 13-year-old girls were all pronounced dead at the scene.

To honor the memory of the girls and to promote Halloween safety, ABC7 teamed up with the girls' families, Santa Ana police and other community partners to host the Fairhaven Fall Festival.

The event was held on Friday at Fairhaven Elementary School and officers offered tips for staying safe during Halloween.

In the video above, Eyewitness News reporter Greg Lee takes us to the event and shows how officials are promoting Halloween safety this year.
