CYPRESS PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police shot and killed a suspect who fired at officers during lengthy chase through the Lincoln Heights area Sunday.
The chase began around 11:45 p.m. Saturday on the 110 Freeway near Avenue 26 in Lincoln Heights. The suspect was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon in an attack on Oct. 30. According to police, the suspect shot at officers at least three times from his vehicle during the chase.
The man eventually got off the freeway and continued the chase. At one point, he stopped to take a drink. Officers tried to shoot out the suspect's tires and used a spike strip during the chase.
The suspect continued to drive around in circles until about 2 a.m. That's when officers surrounded his vehicle near Cypress Avenue and Huron Street in Cypress Park.
Police said the suspect pointed his gun at officers at the end of the chase, and the officers fired back.
"He was ordered to leave the gun and surrender. He pointed the gun at the officers and SWAT officers returned fire, killing the suspect," LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado said.
The suspect was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
No officers were injured.
