LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect with a meat cleaver was shot by a Long Beach police officer responding to a report of an assault.

A police officer arrived at the home in the 300 block of Sunset Street after someone called 911 and reported an assault around 11:20 p.m. Thursday.

When the officer approached the home, a man, identified as 45-year-old Hung Doan Nguyen of Long Beach, exited the house with a meat cleaver. When he refused to drop the weapon, the officer shot Nguyen.

Nguyen was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. Police say he will be booked on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer.
